Treatment

Head, jaw and neck therapy

Hands-on treatment for TMJ dysfunction, clenching, teeth grinding and tension headaches.

You might recognise some of this

A jaw that clicks or catches when you open wide, or feels stiff and sore first thing after a night of clenching. Headaches around the temples or behind the eyes. An ache that travels into the ear, the neck or the base of the skull. Grinding you only found out about from your dentist.

What these tend to share is muscles around the jaw and neck working far harder than they should. That is exactly what hands-on treatment can reach.

The session

Two hours, the whole picture

I ask about your history, sleep and stress, and anything your dentist or GP has flagged. Then I assess how your jaw moves and where it holds. Much of the work is around the temples, cheeks, jaw, neck and shoulders.

Inside the mouth, only with your consent. Some of the muscles behind jaw pain sit deep and can only be reached with a gloved hand inside the mouth. I explain everything first, it stays gentle, and you can stop at any point.

What I combine

Myofascial and soft tissue work
Gentle soft tissue release
Muscle energy techniques to rebalance the jaw muscles
Subtle positional release
Precise, calming techniques that reduce muscle guarding

Clients often notice less clicking, softer facial tension and better sleep.

Questions

Common questions about jaw treatment

Can massage help TMJ pain?

Soft tissue therapy can't change the joint itself, but a lot of jaw discomfort comes from the muscles around it being overworked and guarded. Easing that tension is often where people feel the difference.

Do you treat teeth grinding and clenching?

Yes. I work the jaw, temple and neck muscles that clenching overloads, and many clients find their morning jaw soreness starts to ease.

How many sessions will I need?

I can't promise a number, because your history, the cause and how your tissues respond are all your own. Usually the first step is settling things down, which often means a few sessions about a week apart. By then we'll know what's driving it, what helps most and what you can do yourself, and we decide together from there.

Does the treatment hurt?

Some techniques can feel intense in sensitive areas, but discomfort is never the aim and you never have to push through it. I ease into everything, check in as we go and change the depth and pace whenever you need.

Do you come to me?

Yes, or you can come to Wokingham Therapy Clinic. For jaw and neck work, being at home helps: you can rest straight afterwards instead of driving through traffic, which is often when tension creeps back.
